We founded Gutensite 2002 in San Francisco at the height of the Silicon Valley downturn. For the first five years, we designed and built individual sites for clients primarily in the Bay Area. In 2006 Chad built the Gutensite Content Management System which allowed all our new sites to operate from a central engine, so that we could continually improve both functionality and design in one place for all clients going forward.

Over the next few years, we were joined by a small talented group working from Ohio, Texas and Florida and since then our team has expanded to 4 countries.

We have grown to more than 5,000 users and plan to reach a million in the next few years (why dream small?). But however large we grow, we will still have fantastic customer service and take a real interest in our clients and their dreams—which sounds corny but it’s true.

Why Walnut Creek?

We love the Bay Area and Walnut Creek is really the best of all worlds. It’s close enough to San Francisco to get some culture and great food. Aside from being in the California tech area, it’s walkable, charming, and surrounded by grassy mountains that break out with wild flowers in January. What’s not to love?

Why the Name?

We set out to find a name that would be unique, memorable and available as a domain name! We like the word “guten” which means “good” in German. It has a nice strong sound and we appreciate both the German work ethic and their reputation for excellence in fields like engineering and polka music. Many of us have lived in other countries and loved our experiences so we also liked the idea of incorporating a little world-awareness in our name.

What Makes Us Special?
