Exporting Data

May 16, 2009
Chadwick Meyer
Did you know that you can export all the data from your site? For example, you can export your Account contacts, Blog Articles, My Pages, Profiles, Store Sales data, Products, etc. You own your data and you can take it with you. How do you achieve this great feat? Every list page in the Control Panel has a Search button above the list. When this is clicked the search options appear (sometimes they are already open by default). You can perform a custom search, or just export the full list. Above the search options is a little button that says ...

Presenting the Folsom Series: Check Out the New Set of Free Templates

May 15, 2009
Chadwick Meyer
We've been on a roll lately and that has meant a lot of upgrades and new features for our clients. Our goal is to increase the number of options people have for Free Design Skins, so that everyone can find something that is both professional and a good fit for their website. We're getting there. The new Folsom Series includes 4 different color schemes: red, purple, blue and green. It has plenty of areas for personalization, including: a large standard sized image slideshow area, welcome text, quotes, and modules on the home page, and ...

User Friendliness

May 14, 2009
Chadwick Meyer
When we first created Gutensite, we wanted it to be powerful and flexible so that we could use the framework to build any site for any client. And in the hands of experts it has performed amazingly. However, as we began to open up our platform to anyone who wanted a free site, it became obvious that power and user friendliness are often at odds with one another, especially when a good percentage of our users (especially those with Free Lite versions) initially start  building their site with absolutely zero knowledge of how to use Gutensite, ...

Another Set of New Free Design Skin Templates

May 11, 2009
Chadwick Meyer
We finished up a new set of free designs last week. In keeping with our San Francisco street naming motif, these ones are called "Laurel" and there are three options for color and accents. They are a high end, modern but elegant design with a prominent image promotional area on the home page, as well as the option for individual unique images on each subsequent page (for those who really want to customize the design). Anyone who uses this template will instantly look like a very established, well funded organization. So go get started!

New Endeavour Template

May 07, 2009
Chadwick Meyer
We have installed a new bold template called Endeavour, in honor of HMS Endeavour a Royal Navy research ship which was commanded at one point by Captain Cook on his first voyage of discovery in 1768. Our Endeavour has a large photo slideshow area on the home page, ample featured content areas, large chunky links, and some great hidden features. For example, individual pages can specify their own unique image which will show up in the header. If a page doesn't specify an image, it will display one of several random images you set for all ...

New Cost Calculator

May 02, 2009
Chadwick Meyer
We've added a great new Cost Calculator to our Cost Page that we hope will clear up a lot of confusion. It's amazing what a mini-app like this can do to help people visualize their whole project. What used to require 4 different pages of explanation and comparison, can now be done in one small chart. It's fun to use and hopefully people will better understand all the service options available. This sort of a calculator is something that lots of clients should consider adding to their site, because like a picture is worth a thousand words, a ...

We've improved the settings for Podcasting, so that now you can control the specific category and subcategory directly from Gutensite, as well as keywords for the entire Podcast Category (plus individual keywords for each podcast).

Gutensite Turns 1.0!

April 10, 2009
Chadwick Meyer
It's been a long time coming, but we are proud to announce that Gutensite has finally come out of beta and has now reached version 1.0. We had a very long list of features we felt were essential for a good Content Management System and now that we've reached our first goal, we can now begin promoting ourselves. Since turning 1.0 we've already begun working towards 2.0 with a huge list of upgrades planned. But don't mind us if we bask in this accomplishment for a few minutes. Some of the recent upgrades to the Control Panel this month ...

Make SEO a Priority

March 18, 2009
Chadwick Meyer
“SEO” is a buzz term that gets thrown around a lot these days... it stands for “Search Engine Optimization” and refers to steps you can take to increase your website’s rankings on prominent search engines such as Google and Yahoo!. Companies everywhere (some trustworthy, some not) are trying to sell their SEO expertise. In general, we don’t trust most of their promises, but we do believe basic SEO practices are essential, which is why all our sites are built with these principles in mind. Our CMS offers fantastic control over the most ...

Statistics & Tracking

February 07, 2009
Chadwick Meyer
Did you know that your website has advanced statistics and tracking capabilities? You can easily enable third party tracking codes from vendors like Google Analytics (free) or other commercial products like Visistat. Simply create an account with the vendor and retrieve your account ID. Then login to the GutenAdmin and enable tracking for that vendor. See our Traffic Analysis and Statistics FAQ for a step by step guide for Google Analytics, then you'll know how to do it for other vendors as well. Why is tracking important? Well, for one, it ...

Save on Bandwidth Embed Videos

January 07, 2009
Chadwick Meyer
If you are on a budget, but you want to have a lot of multimedia on your site, consider piggybacking off popular video sites like YouTube and Vimeo. You can upload your files to their site, then use the embed code on your site. Our Multimedia Resource Library allows you to upload your own files directly, or to link to an external file (on another server), or simply paste in the embed code provided by the third party sites. Then in the Multimedia section of your site, we'll display the video according to the method you've chosen. And if your ...
