Old Servers Decommissioned

December 09, 2013
Chadwick Meyer
Per our published schedule and instructions, the old servers are now decommissioned. If you cannot access your site, it is because unfortunately you have ignored all the emails we've sent you over the past month and you never took the necessary 5 minutes to update your domain's DNS records. For those who subscribe to our Domain & DNS management service, we were able to update the DNS without any hassle. But for all others, this was your responsibility. In truth, we have helped out many other clients who are not subscribed to our service, ...

November 22, 2013
Chadwick Meyer
Do not ignore this CRITICAL information about your website and our major server upgrade and migration. In order to ensure the long term reliability of your website we have been working hard on your behalf for the past four months to create a brand new server infrastructure with the redundancy and scalability that will serve you far into the future. There may be some elements that are temporarily inconvenient and frustrating for you over the next few days of migration. I am really sorry for those things in advance, but this upgrade is ...

Major Server Migration Under Way

November 21, 2013
Chadwick Meyer
We appreciate all your patience as we've been focused for the past 4 months on a major server infrastructure upgrade, to rebuild and migrate our hosted CMS to Rackspace's Cloud servers. This has required a rewrite of how we deploy websites, how we roll out updates and versions to the core code base, how we manage hosting, how we connect with databases, and many overall changes to how the CMS works across multiple web servers, connecting with a cluster of read and write database servers, and other servers for extra services. We've grown ...

We were among the top four platforms to receive this recognition and voting has now begun for who will win the final honor. Upcoming Migration to more Scalable, Robust Servers

September 27, 2013
Chadwick Meyer
In July we bagan officially working on rebuilding Gutensite 2.0 from the ground up, with a new codebase and new server architecture. But shortly after we began, our existing servers gave us a fright and we knew we had to step back and make certain that the server architecture for 1.0 was fully stable and will continue to be scalable far into the future. So we have been heads down for the past 2 months working on this massive overhaul. The migration has been progressing steadily and is nearly complete! We have successfully migrated all ...

Gutensite Is Now Responsive!

August 09, 2013
Chadwick Meyer
Responsive Design has become THE biggest buzzword in web design circles this past year, and with good reason because a well designed responsive website allows mobile visitors to view a beautiful version of your site even if they are on their smartphone. This means you don't need to maintain a separate "mobile version" of your website, things just look awesome for everyone. View one of our demos on your smartphone or open the demo on your computer and just resize your browser window to watch how the layout changes automatically to "respond" ...

Integrating with Rackspace Cloud Files and Cloud Servers

August 06, 2013
Chadwick Meyer
As part of our long term server infrastructure upgrades, we are integrating with Rackspace's Cloud Files to store all your images, documents and multimedia. Cloud Files provides 3 redundant copies of your files (in case any single version gets corrupted or is on hardware that fails), and it delivers those files to your visitors through a CDN (Content Delivery Nework) that caches a copy of the files closer to the visitor which speeds up your site load times. It also allows us to offer unlimited amounts of scalable storage and fast bandwidth at ...

New Responsive Designs

June 05, 2013
Trevor Ryan
As mobile devices now account for almost 25% of all web traffic, responsive design is more important than ever. While our websites have been 100% mobile friendly and HTML5 compatible for many years, we're now creating new free designs that are 100% responsive. How is responsive design different from mobile friendly/HTML5 compatible? No more need for pinching and zooming to view parts of your tablet or smartphone screen. Now the content and design seamlessly resize to look good on any size screen. Currently, we are in the process of ...

Daniela Meyer
Gutensite presents Olav. No it's not an IKEA lamp, it's a new free design. The love child of Scandinavian minimalism and fruity island rum drinks, this design is both ultra clean and ultra happy. Comes in tomato bisque, cloudless blue, electric mint, golden goose and silver wave.

Server Unavailable for 30 Minutes - Configuration Limit Reached

May 15, 2013
5/15/13 4:30pm (PST) - One of our servers responsible for hosting reached a configuration limit and all sites running on that server became unavailable until we were able to troubleshoot, detect, and update the configuration around 5:00pm. The server itself is in good health, and more than adequate for it's tasks, but the default configuration for how many files it could have open at one time was too low. Every account that is created opens up several log files, and when a new account was created, it opened up one too many log files....

Opening Up: Gutensite Enables Direct Access to Design Files

April 30, 2013
Chadwick Meyer
As we develop more and more partnerships with third party designers, we are opening up our platform to give designers greater control over every aspect of a website. We are excited to announce the new Design File Editor which is now live and available to any Admin account with the "Design" access key. The new code editor enables any professional designer with knowledge of HTML and CSS, to customize the code for any design file, for any content type, on any website. You can grant access to an in-house designer or any third party designer you ...

New Feature Release: Visual Site Map View

April 19, 2013
Chadwick Meyer
We are excited to release a new feature for the Control Panel that lets you visualize your entire website and add content all from one page. The page shows you the main sections of your website, along with the sub links under each section. You can drag sections and pages around, or add new pages and links to your menu. The lists are editable if you want to change the name, quickly toggle a link on/off, or delete a link. You can add new links or pages directly to a section so that the CMS already knows what section the new page belongs to. ...

Please Let Us Help You

March 29, 2013
Chadwick Meyer
Two days ago, we spoke with a client that called to cancel their Gutensite because the Control Panel was too difficult for them to use. This represents a failure on our part. Our robust platform has grown to meet your advanced needs, but we know it has a learning curve that is not immediately intuitive to many people. And many of you are still on grandfathered packages that didn’t previously include proactive support, so you may feel like you can’t ask for help. But we have learned that proactive support is one of the most valuable things ...

Trevor Ryan
We're excited to announce our recent Design Partnership with Mazzarello Media and Arts! Gutensite has just put the finishing touches on Mazzarello's latest design, DiggityDog.com, the premier pet sitting/walking company in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mazzarello's design is as brilliantly cute as it is functional. We are proud to be able to support talented designers like Mazzarello Media and Arts and are glad to help businesses get the most ROI from their website. If you're a designer and are interested in joining a partnership, powered by ...

Chadwick Meyer
This article is part of a series Comparing CMS Platforms through the Lifecycle of a Website. A successful website should lead to growth in your business. You can start with a simple site if you are on a budget, and then add features as you learn how to optimize your website for conversions and integrate your website into important business processes that save you money and improve customer satisfaction. Once you reach this point, you have already exceeded the limitations of Squarespace, Wix and Weebly. These platforms are not ...

Comparing CMS Platforms for Managing a Website

March 22, 2013
This article is part of a series Comparing CMS Platforms through the Lifecycle of a Website. A website that actually provides value to a business or nonprofit will need to be more than just a few pages. It will need to have new content that is useful to regular visitors and discoverable by search engines so that new customers find the website when they are looking for your product or service. Anything less will be wasted opportunity, because your competitors will steal your customers’ attention with a better website. Visual website ...

Comparing CMS Platforms for Building a Website

March 22, 2013
Chadwick Meyer
This article is part of a series Comparing CMS Platforms through the Lifecycle of a Website. Before asking Gutensite to help them build a website, many of our clients also look at platforms like Wordpress, Squarespace, Wix and Weebly. So although building the website is only one small part of the website's lifecycle, we will compare these platforms and the results they produce. Wix and Weebly are essentially WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) HTML editors for building static websites. They take a visual drag and drop approach to ...

Comparing CMS Platforms through the Lifecycle of a Website

March 22, 2013
Chadwick Meyer
Building a paper airplane is cheap, easy and fun! But it won’t fly you to your destination. When choosing which platform is best for your website, sometimes what seems like the easiest option ends up being just a waste of time. There are three phases in every website’s life. Unfortunately when most people choose which website platform is best for their project, they only think about the first “Build” phase. As a result, CMS platforms that have instant visual appeal usually get a lot of attention and praise. But when the sugar rush wears ...
