We are extremely excited to be nearing the end of a major Gutensite platform rebuild which will offer a completely new design, workflow and modern framework. This ambitious work on the 2.0 platform has taken all of our attention for the last 2 years. We will be sharing more information about 2.0 really soon, but in the meantime, one benefit of this development is going to be available for all our clients on the current 1.0 platform as well.

So the good news is that we have just finished our new system for automatically providing free SSL certificates to every domain and website on our platform!

In the past, the only way to get an SSL certificate was to have us purchase one privately and then manually install it (for a cost of $100). Now SSL Certificates are automatic and free, because we developed a sophisticated system that interfaces with an open certificate authority called Let's Encrypt and automatically creates, installs and renews these certificates every 3 months (which is ...

Our planned web server infrastructure upgrades were completed successfully. It required some key changes to the Gutensite platform to allow sessions to persist across multiple servers, and for custom files to be accessible on all servers. Big thanks to Matt for taking on this task.

The new infrastructure allows us to do true "horizontal scaling", with load balancing and much better redundancy. That means that your website is hosted on multiple servers at once. Every page load is distributed across a network of servers that are balanced based on load. If one web server becomes unresponsive, or needs to be taken offline for maintenance, the other servers will take up the load and there should be no interruption or slowness. It's an exciting upgrade for us.

What's Next?

Our next immediate infrastructure plans are to migrate the Gutensite web and database servers from our current datacenter at Rackspace to our new datacenter at Linode. Rackspace is a widely respected hosting service, ...

Over the past few weeks we have upgraded our entire server infrastructure to new, faster, more powerful machines, solid state drives, more CPU and RAM and upgraded software. That means faster web servers, database servers and new load balancers. These changes should improve performance for your website and also give us more flexibility to scale and respond to future server failure scenarios.

To take full advantage of these changes we require 5 minutes of work on your part. We need you to point your Domain's DNS to a new IP address. This is urgent because we will be phasing out the old servers as soon as possible.

Below are some instructions, which can also be found in your control panel: Support > Domain & DNS.

How are we already helping?

If are subscribed to Gutensite’s Premium Domain & DNS Management, you don’t need to do anything. Your domain DNS has already been updated and your domain is now pointing to the new updated servers. You can confirm if you are ...

We've released a great new feature for the calendar which lets you turn on a map that sits above the calendar or event list. The map shows the location of each event. The markers are clickable and will either open up the event details in a popup window or go directly to the event details page. This is particularly useful if you have several events spread across the community and you want to help people find the gather that is closest to them (e.g. community groups).

This feature is activated by turning on the "Display Map" option on the calendar category, and then simply entering an address for each event. Any events that do not have an address will obviously not appear on the page.

If you looked at our Blog, lately, you might conclude one of two things: 1) Gutensite must not have much to report, 2) Gutensite must be too crazy busy to blog about all the great things that are happening. If you chose door number two, you win. Go have a free website, on us. Unfortunately, I have to admit, blogging is not a high priority compared to all the other important things that demand my time (as much as I would love to spend my day sitting in a coffee shop blogging about how cool we are).

But the truth is, we've been working on lots of great new features that we've been releasing to our community. We've also hired three new people in the last couple months to help meet your needs in a timely fashion and help us meet our own ambitious development goals.

Here is a list of the top of my head of some of the things we've been doing (on top of all the custom work we do for specific client projects, which keeps us extremely busy):

  • Released Total Overhaul of MLS Pages and ...

New Default Portfolio Page

We've been busy overhauling the look and feel of many of the advanced functionality pages that you may be using on your site. You may have noticed some marked improvement, if you happen to be using the default design (most people are). We recently mentioned the design and functionality upgrades to the calendar, but we've also improved the look of other pages:

  • Blog
  • Contact Page
  • Profiles
  • Portfolio
  • Testimonials
  • Resources Files
  • Multimedia
  • Communities

If you considered using one of these pages in the past, but weren't happy with how it looked, try it again. If you add the information and a nice photo to your records, these pages on your site will look ...

Calendar

We recently completed a whole slew of functionality upgrades, including some great new features for our calendar. Some of the upgrades include:

  • Advanced Repetition Options: now you can get crazy with custom repeating events, until your brain explodes with the possibilities.
  • Popup Details: now clicking on an event in the calendar brings up a simple popup box that lists the important details for an event (plus an option to view the full event details).
  • List View: now you can view your events in a long list (instead of a month based calendar). This is helpful for events that occur over an entire year, e.g. concert dates.
  • Improved Viewing Options: we've improved the interface for selecting the view mode, date range, and categories.
  • Improved Looks: we've improved the look of the entire calendar.
  • Subscribe Options: now people can subscribe to your calendar so that their local calendar program can be automatically updated and synced with your website calendar.
  • Import/Export: now ...
