Could that meeting have been an email? That support phone call, a better online dashboard? That consultation, an e-book? That sale, an online order? How much of what you do in the physical presence of customers could be done virtually?

It’s great seeing each other face to face, and we definitely don’t want to lose this beauty of human contact in life or business. But the world is changing. And whether you and all your customers are under coronavirus quarantine, or you just want to empower your customers under normal circumstances to save time, by giving the option to manage their account or buy your product/service online, it’s time to start thinking about how to expand your business’s digital capacity.

A powerful website should be able to increase leads, facilitate sales, empower self-service, and even augment your revenue by expanding new digital products and services that you haven’t even considered.

If you have a business, you already have the legal and administrative ...

With the Coronavirus shutting down the global economy and forcing people to stay in their homes, there is a lot of uncertainty about what comes next, how long we will be sheltering at home, and what massive economic impact this will have.

These are troubling times with many questions, but one thing is for certain: we are living in a new world. We must adapt.

How is your business or organization going to be impacted by this new reality? If this lasts more than a few weeks, or happens again in the future, is your business ready to operate at least part of it's services digitally? Are there parts of your business that can continue virtually if you had a more sophisticated website?

For the past twenty years, business has been slowly migrating online, but most small businesses still don't even have a website, or if they do, it's a little more than a business card. Very few businesses have thought about how to leverage the incredible power of the internet to capture leads, drive sales, ...

It’s important to run an organized and optimized business. Bad processes will cost time, resources, sales, customer dissatisfaction and loss of team moral. So you need to constantly evaluate the biggest pain points at each stage of your growth, because these constantly change. Then you have to create the processes that fuel your success. But you can't let perfect be the enemy of good. And 80/20 is an important principle in business and life that prevents you from getting bogged down and never reaching your goals, i.e. sometimes 80% is good enough and the remaining 20% from good to perfect costs too much without enough ROI.

At each scale, you have to prioritize different things, and that means you may do things manually or less efficiently for a while, because the cost of automating them is too great. That’s okay, because you need to prove the market, prove the need justifies the investment in automation. But when you reach each new level, the ROI equation changes, the manual work ...

Creating and growing a business is hard work. Competition is always fierce. There is rarely a clear path to success. You have to bring your idea into existence through sheer will power. You force an idea to become reality. You face obstacles that stop most people from trying. You make the best decisions you can, with the limited information and resources you have. You fail. Over and Over. It's messy. And then sometimes you succeed.

This type of chaos isn’t an excuse for poor planning or bad management. We’re talking about the type of chaos that is born out of fast growth and the new challenges that come with that. So don’t be afraid of the chaos. It’s normal for every great endeavor.

If you succeed, there will be times when things settle down for you and your team, and you sit back and enjoy what you accomplished. You will have moments where you finally reach a great profitability ratio, so you aren’t worried about meeting payroll and you even have extra savings to make the next ...

Businesses need to make sure they have taken every step to be found online. This means having a beautiful, SEO optimized website, having a presence on the social media platforms where your customers frequent, and also being listed in appropriate business directories such as Google maps.

The problem is, as the online gatekeepers evolve, their recommendations for businesses change. All the time. Recently, I discovered Google had lovingly converted Gutensite's Google Places profile (the old business listing recommendation) into a lonely, empty, shell Google Plus profile, with no followers, not posts, etc. So we suddenly had two Google plus social pages for our business: our regular Gutensite page and another empty page that was the "verified" business listing, which is what shows up on Google Maps, and as the local business information in the right sidebar if someone searches for Gutensite.

This is confusing for visitors, and becomes redundant, splitting our followers across two ...

There are thousands of Content Management Systems on the market that you could use to build your website. One of the problems with growing your business large (a challenge we are facing more and more each day) is maintaining human relationships with your clients. Good relationships, Good will between businesses and their customers, builds loyalty and earns referrals the old fashioned (and stable) way.

Already I see this problem in Gutensite, because I no longer have a personal relationship with all our clients (I only know the really old clients that remain loyal because of the personal attention we have given them over the years). These days though, my employees interact with our clients on a daily basis and I usually only get involved with larger clients (initially for planning) or when a client has a problem that needs special attention. This is something I don't like, I want to show all clients personal attention, but it's just not possible. At some point you have to trust your employees to carry on the values that you have carefully infused into the culture of the company. Company ...

Where did october go? I remember having a birthday at some point, but the rest is a blur. The good news, I suppose, is that the economy has finally picked up (for us at least) and we have more work than we can handle. We need to hire another designer and programmer, immediately. The bad news is, due to the sudden influx of work over the past couple months, I have been sucked back into the vortex of project management and programming, which means I have had no time to do any pro-active business development, partnership development, or strategic leadership for the company. This is the story of all small businesses, and it happens far too easily. But responding to the immediate crises, though it seems responsible, is counterproductive to growth.

I'm sharing this, because I'm sure other small businesses have experienced the same thing. And it's a good reminder to all business owners, that your business' success is not based on your ability to personally address every need that arises, ...
